I recently adopted an abused child. His biological mother lives in this town and was allowed supervised visitation before she surrendered her parental rights. Obviously, she knows who I am. She has been talking throughout our community, insisting that I have acted in a less than ethical way in handling this matter. My occupation is as an Early Childhood Specialist, this could affect my career. How can I stop her.

I am a law school graduate. What I offer is mere information, not to be construed as forming an attorney client relationship.

It IS called defamation. Slander. If she is hurting you in your career, then you get slander per se, which doesn't require you to show any damages. In the eyes of the law, what she said, the topic is so bad in and of itself that there is no need to prove your rep was actually damaged.

May I suggest you contact a personal injury attorney who deals with defamation cases. Try attorneypages.com and your state bar.

Hope this helps.
