bc,canada a company says i owe them money for an invoice although i did not receive anything from this company. i cancelled a p.o. for product before any was sent and ordered it through another company instead. all paperwork is available on this. the original company says i owe them anyway and has put collection companies on us but they have dropped the matter when i have given them my documentation. the problem now is that the company is posting libelous claims on industry related message boards where i do business and my reputation is extremely important stating i have ripped them off for $12,000 and i should pay them. this is a huge blow to my reputation and will cost me an exorbitant amount of money in lost business not to mention an embarrassment to my personal self. i would like to know if there are lawyers who would take a libel case for damages on a percentage basis as i cannot afford to sue this company on my own.

This board deals with U.S. law only. It would be suggested that you find a board that covers Canadian law.

company doing libellous postings is US

Thank you for your response. I should add that the company doing the postings about us is a US company and is posting to sites based in the US. Does this make any difference?
Thanks

One other thought on this subject....
Your post said that you "cancelled a p.o. for product before any was sent and ordered it through another company instead"

Since there obviously was a Purchase Order involved (which implies some written documentation) what do those documents say about cancellation of the order?? How did you 'cancel' the item?? Are there 'cancellation charges' in the contract?? What type notification is required?? Does it require their acceptance of your cancellation?? Lots of questions that would need to be answered before you self-determine your position!

The fact that you entered into a contract to purchase an item and then cancelled it before shipping, does not automatically release you from your obligation to fulfill the contract.
