What is the name of your state? Tennessee
I know Tennessee is a "Right to work" state so I am almost embarrassed to write but friends and family believe I should contact an attorney. November 30th of last year I was called into a Senior VP's conference room and was asked to resign. I work for a company and they sign my checks, but my salary has always been reimbursed by another company for I am a liaison between the two companies. The company that signs my checks said the other company didn't feel comfortable working with me any longer and it was that company that wanted me to resign. They said over and over, how they asked the company to reconsider but the company was adamant they didn't want me.
Today, I found out finally it was all a lie. In 2006, I sat in on an interview for a position that would be working with me and the VP doing the interview not only offered the person the job but promised them a promotion within two or three months to be over me. It was very awkward since I had been handling this company for about 16 years and this new person had no experience whatsoever in the industry or even remotely close to what the job description was asking for. After the interview I asked the VP why he would offer her a promotion without it being posted and why I wouldn't even be considered and he said it was because I worked in marketing and this position would fall under sales. After the interview when he was asked about who he hired, not once did he talk about her qualifications but that she was a Christian with good morals and standards. I went to personnel and told them about the interview. He got his hand slapped and my life was a living hell for the next six months. Every day I was being called into my boss's office about something I didn't do. I have to tell you, I apologized for things I didn't do. I sucked up to people I never should have just to keep my job because it was obvious this man wanted me fired. Then for six months... nothing. I was relieved and finally felt he had moved on.
I couldn't have been more wrong. I was brought into an office and told the other company didn't feel comfortable working with me any longer. I was told they wouldn't give a reason and I wasn't to contact them. I was given the option to leave that day and resign or I could take the next 30 days to find another job in the company with no guarantee that I would get the job even if I was qualified. If I took the 30 days I would not receive a severance package of one week for each year I worked at the company. This added up to 19 weeks pay. I knew they weren't going to give me a job because there was another job available at that moment in the same department that I was more than qualified for and they didn't offer it to me. I really felt if I didn't take the severance package I would be used to train my replacement and then fired.
Well, I was just contacted by the other company who had no idea of why I was let go. They said they received an e-mail the following Monday saying I was no longer with the company.
Do I have any rights at all? The company that signed my checks is refusing to let anyone in management give me a reference. I was never written up once and all my reviews were at least meets requirements with the majority being exceeds requirements. I was replaced by someone twenty years younger but to be honest I don't think that had anything to do with why they let me go. I believe it was because of the VP that got his hand slapped for inappropriately offering the promotion to the new employee during the interview process.
I don't want to waste any one's time if there is not a legal case of any kind.
