What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California
A friend's husband took out a million dollar term policy on her life when they were married with himself as the beneficiary. They are now divorced and the policy was not dealt with during the divorce. She has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and doesn't want her ex to benefit if she dies (they have no minor children).

Does she have any recourse? Or is the policy in force until it terms out?

No recourse whatsoever. If she didn't deal with it during the divorce, there is nothing to be done now. He is entitled to the money if he paid the premiums. She can only hope that he misses a premium payment so that the policy will lapse.
