A man dies with children out of wedlock and his mother is listed as beneficiary on a life insurance policy from his employer. Can the policy be contested? Are his children entitled to anything?

No it can not be contested--he had the right to name anyone he wanted as beneficiary. You need to be finding out if the man left a last will and testament (check at the county courthouse of the city where the death occurred to see if the will has been filed. If he had one, the executor will probably file it within 30 days after the death), and if he had no will, the children should get an attorney to file to open up the estate for probate so they can get their share of any other assets he might have.
