What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Virginia

I'm not sure if I am putting this in the right area, but thought this would be a good place to start.

Ex-h and I have 3 kids, he has 1 with his new wife, marriage is getting rocky. He is deploying soon and was talking to me about making sure if anything happened to him that he wanted to ensure that myself and our 3 kids were taken care of. I know, shocking but not going to go there. When I was in the military I remember being told that if you are married the wife has to be the beneficiary or the current wife has to sign off that she accepts not being the primary. He is concerned that his current wife would keep all money and give nothing to his other children as well as asking her to sign that she isn't the primary she would get pissed. Can he just divide it equally between his children? All are under the age of 18.

He can divide his SGLI however he wants. But, since he is married, his current wife will be notified if she is not the primary. She doesn't have to "sign off" on his choice--she is required to be notified.
