What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? TN
I am trying to help a friend get a death benefit on a life insurance policy her dad took out in her name from the company he worked for. Aetna holds the policy and has confirmed that but they will not release it until the business he worked for tells them to. She has not been able to get the business to cooperate with her or even give her any information even though she is listed as next of kin. He was working in Afghanistan at the time of his death for a defense contractor. What should she do next?

Contacting the HR department at the company where he worked comes to mind....

Quite frankly, this is kind of a "duh" question.

The HR dept has been contacted numerous times. They refuse to discuss the matter or call back. The business he was working for is one of those secretive private operations for the government. They can not even get them to release his personal belongings that were remaining in Afghanistan. Hence, the question, what should she do next?

If your friend is the beneficiary of the policy and she's supplied a copy of the death certificate to the employer and they are stonewalling submitting the claim, then her no-cost recourse is to contact her State's Office of the Insurance Commissioner (OIC.) Option B is to consult with an attorney.
