What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Ohio

So I will be filing for a divorce from my Husband at the end of July. I had to be living back in Ohio for at least 6 months before doing so. He currently resides in Tennessee. I am trying to be civil about the custody of our son whom is 3 whereas his best interest is my only concern and I'm a firm believer of him needing both his father and I in his life and currently we are exchanging him every other month. Obviously when he starts school this won't be an option. I am wondering what the normal custody arrangement between parents living in different two different states is? His father is trying to say he wants to do exchange him every 6 months and I am almost positive this is not possible due to the fact that he would have to attend two different schools. I just need some overview of the options. I would love to be able to file this ourselves without all the legal and drawn out process.

Switching every six months is not in the child's best interests educationally. I do know a family that switched every year and it worked fine for them, but even that can be difficult for the child.

The most common arrangement is that one of you will be the custodial parent with the other parent receiving visitation. Perhaps the noncustodial parent gets most of the summer, spring break, half of winter break, and, if you're not too far apart, most of the 3 or 4 day weekends during the school year.

But does shared parenting actually equate to 50/50?

OG can correct me if I'm off base here, but there may be a question of the child's Ohio residency based on what you've said here. If Dad decides to lawyer up and make this difficult (because you're not giving him what he wants), that could be an issue.

As an aside, I went to school with 3 kids whose parents traded them off once a year. It was really odd having one kid in class for a year, then the others for a year. If you want your kids to be well-adjusted and have friends in their peer groups, don't do this to them.
