What is the name of your state?
New York.
I have a loan. I sent my enrollment information saying I'm still a student 4 months to the 2 places I have loans from, in order to defer payment. One got it and processed it, the other says they didn't get it. Same info was sent to both.
Now, a little while ago I got a call from a debt collector saying that the loan for a few hundred dollars had defaulted and sent to their agency.
I called the place where I got the loan, told them I sent in my info, and they wouldn't talk to me, they said I have to call the debt collector.
So I call the debt collector. The debt collector tells me that it had defaulted, and that I have to pay an extra hundred dollars in fees.
This is a misunderstanding, I said I'm obviously responsible for the loan, but not for these fees, because I sent in my enrollment info, and what else can I do? I didn't even get a notice until the debt collector called me.
He said they don't have to give me any notice, and that since I said I'm responsible for the loan (which I am, but not those fees), I could file a dispute, but that the dispute would almost positively be ignored (!). Well I said I'm responsible for the ORIGINAL amount, not for these fees. Too bad was the response, and that even if I resend the information a second time, that it's too late and they wouldn't backdate.
What do I do? I know I'm responsible for the loan and intend to pay, but what about those fees which I do not believe I am responsible for?
