Loan not paid back from son of x-girlfriend

Hello I was dating this girl who has a son. l lent her son (17 year old) $300 to pay off a debt to his sister. He sort of stole the money from his sister and therefore he had to move out of her sisters house. I lent him the money so that hopefully can move back into his sisters house.

He paid me back 60 dollars to date.

Now he is not paying me back and not returning my texts. It's been 6 months.

We have no written contract.

He is now 18 years old.

What legal action can I take against him?

I don't need the money its the principle that I am trying to teach him.

You can't steal money from your sister and not pay for your mistakes.

I thought about calling his sister and telling her where he got the money.

I am no longer dating his mother.

His mom is not returning my texts or phone calls either.

You can sue the young fellow in small claims if you feel the need to teach him something.

A debt incurred by a minor under the age of 18 can be disaffirmed within a reasonable time after he becomes 18. What's "reasonable"? I don't know. There's no particular statute about it. Other states have statutes that allow a year, maybe more. Case law in Texas might follow similar limits. At any rate, sue him and you are likely to get nowhere.

Ratting him out to his sister may have a better chance of getting you some money back.

Lesson for the future: Never get financially involved with girlfriends and especially not the girlfriend's family.

If you sue him and lose, you risk teaching him that he can get away with anything.

If you sue him and win, but he still doesn’t pay you, you run the same risk.

I wouldn’t exert any effort trying to teach him anything.

Your best effort to teach him something should have been to not lend him money to begin with.
