What is the name of your state?Texas

I live in Texas and I work at a medical facility. Well, I deal with patients in nursing homes and in thier own personal homes. Anyway, I have this question about lock units. Why is it possible that patients are kept in these types of facilities against their will, and without a court order. I mean, dont these people have a right to choose if they want to be in facilities such as these. I think it is horrible how people lock these people up, and dont give them right to an attourney. What is the deal, here? Please help!!!!!

The majority of people in lock units are there because they have demonstrated past behaviours in that indicate that they must be in one in order to be kept safe since they were incapable of making wise choices or EVEN recognizing the risk to them selfs. There are people in lockwards who have Teams who are able to make the decisions as to what is in the persons best interest. Those teams can include family members , social services, Legal gaurdians apppointed by courts, Physicians, and conservators. AS HIGH function as some of the clients who live in lockwards MAY appear DONT be fooled. Most of the time its the clients own past behaviours and inability to recognize danger that got them declared a vulnerable adult. If you seem concerned about some one in such a place you can contact groups like ARC or your states ombudsmans office for developmentally disabled adults and learn more about your states laws.
