What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Currently NC, prev. VA

I have a couple questions and will try to stick to the facts.

Son is 12 and lives in VA - Divorce/Custody was final 06/2011, order states I have EOW and 1 day during week.

Even though court order says ex has custody, my son and I lived together and ex remained in another part of state with new family until Nov.

Here's where it gets tricky- I was mentally abused by ex (daily) and swallowed all my medication (bi polar/depression meds) trying to escape his constant put-downs. My son was with his dad for the weekend and my ex called the cops for a wellness check after I didn't answer the phone. I do have prior attempts and thought my life was back on track since starting new medications.

Since this last attempt I have moved in with a friend in NC. My son has come down 2 times and stayed with me unsupervised since my friend (female) was out of town. My ex is now saying I can't talk with my son on the phone and letting a 12 yr old decide if he wants to come down for the weekend. I'm tired of being under his control and asking his permission to talk with my child.

I want to change my visitation to a long distance plan, is this possible so soon after original orders? Can my ex be forced to allow phone contact with my son?

I know I messed up by trying to kill myself and there's no excuse. I moved out of the state to work on my life and to get away from my ex.

I just want to be in my childs life and my ex is trying to force me out.

What does the COURT ORDER state -- without the names but word for word other than the names?

Does this situation sound very similar to a thread posted a few weeks (days???) ago by a Dad who requested a welfare check on his ex? The details seem really similar but I can't find the thread.
