(1) Do not go with the divorce lawyer with the ad on the front of the yellow pages. Seriously. In my observation, that's a recipe for high cost (gotta pay for the ad somehow) and not necessarily the best representation.
(2) Ask anyone you know who has been divorced in the area. I'm skeptical about online ratings - they can be faked. Learn to read between the lines. For example, if someone's divorce actually went to trial - was it because it was legally necessary? (Mine was.) Did their lawyer recommend lots of motions that cost more in legal fees than the $ argued over? Mediation is a lot cheaper and preferable in many cases - but there are cases where mediation just isn't an option.
(3) A lot depends on what you want/need.
Finally, make sure that you have initial consults with more than one lawyer - including the one with the ad on the billboard and/or cover of the yellow pages.
(Because it can preclude your STBX from retaining that one with all the ads, due to conflict of interest.
At least in my case it did - which means that the ex eventually retained a competent lawyer - too bad ex wouldn't listen to her...)
