What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? ohio

Hello all! I was just informed of my grandfather passing we were never close but he was still my grandpa. I never was able to see him while he was sick. I ran into my cousins at the store & he told me of paps passing which happened last year. Cousin told me to get in contact with the probate court about paps estate I did & I wasn't listed but the will & everything was done last minutte last year right before he died. So i'm not sure if somebody else did his will or what. Am i entitled to any of his estate. He lived in south carolina. My father died in 2002. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

You are not entitled to anything because of mere relations.

My grandfather had always told me that no matter what happened. I would be getting a monetary gift. So wouldn't I be entitled to it?.?.?.

Not unless:

1) the gift was included in his will, or

2) your father was left something in grandfather's will and 1) the will provides that your father's descendants would take your father's share if your father predeceased; or 2) the will did not have any provisions concerning a predeceased beneficiary, or

3) the will was defective and grandfather's probate estate was administered under intestacy (that is, as if he had no will)

You left out a biggy:

4) he still retained sufficient assets at the time of his death to cover the costs of funeral, end of life care, and his creditors, and then to have additional funds for distribution to her.

True, for sure.

But, I'll parse words in my defense.... She asked if she was "entitled." She could still be "entitled" even if it was not possible to fulfill the bequest.

Boo!!! Boo!!! Weak!!!

Well, I just had to point it out.

It's amazing how many people come on here and ask questions like: "My great uncle Charlie, who was in a nursing home the past 6 years just died. When I had my Confirmation he told me there's be something for me in his will, but now his family is telling me there's nothing there for me . . ." It seems that many young people are oblivious to the expense extended facility care or hopitalization/medical procedures can eat up from an estate.

I work in default real estate, and I see a whole lot of homeowners dying in debt with zero home equity because they borrowed against it and used it up..
