What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

I am hoping that I have already solved my problem this evening, but I would like some advice in advance just in case I have not.

Within the last year, a family moved into the apartment next door.

On occasion, including this afternoon, there is very loud music blasting through my walls. The music is usually not of a loud genre, but the volume is set so loud that I actually feel as if it is coming from my own apartment. The music is easily heard from the street as well. The pounding bass is especially annoying.

It is generally my philosophy that if a problem is only once in a while, that it is not worth the trouble of confronting the offender. I have therefore been keeping a record of how often I hear the music to help determine whether I should just put up with it, or confront the neighbors.
Since the first incident on October 8th, today was the 13th time I have heard loud music, and the first time in over two weeks. I have heard it as much as three times in a week recently, and there have been six incidences in the last 30 days.
This afternoon I decided I had had enough. I went to knock on his door, but the music was so loud, he did not answer.
A couple hours later, when the music finally ended, I knocked on his door to ask him the favor of lowering the volume in the future. He was neither, apologetic , nor confrontational, he basically just said "Ok". I politely deferred the blame to our "cardboard walls" although in this case, the volume was beyond reasonable.
I believe him to be of a docile nature, but he has the appearance of someone you would not want as your enemy.

I am hoping this is the end of the loud music. However, if it still continues, should I confront him again, or should I complain to the landlord?
I am fortunate that the landlord lives on the other side of him, so I will not hear music this loud in the evening. However, both landlord and the owner are negligent, as I have alluded to in another thread.

If you think I should confront him if again if needed, should I do this on the next violation, or should I wait?
Hopefully I will not actually need any advice, but if past experiences are any barometer, the odds are high my concerns are not over.
