A friend of mine lost his wallet. He didn't know where he had lost it. The police then called him telling him that his wallet was found and that he should go to the police station to pick it up. When he went to go pick it up he was detained since they had found one hit of acid in his wallet. How much time does a hit of acid get? They told him that they could charge him for attempted murder. Is this true? Or is this just some ploy to get him to cooperate with them and rat some of his friends out like they asked him to do? They told him they would talk to the DA to get him a lesser charge if he helped them. He got scared so he did cooperate with an arrest of another person. How much would he get? Is it possible for him to only go through a drug program or something? Will he HAVE TO serve time??? HELP!!!

Any links to legal books online, etc. would also be appreciated.

It was just a ploy. He could never have been charged with attempted murder for possessing a hit of acid. What charges to file is up to the DA, and the police, if they ask for anything at all, invariably advocate greater, not lesser, charges. All your friend has achieved by talking with the police is to get another person in trouble. This is a good example of why the constitution grants us as citizens the right to remain silent and why we should exercise it when the police want to question us. The punishment your friend will get depends on the state, but I doubt that in any state he would do time for one hit of LSD. He is likely to get probation or, if available, drug diversion for first time offenders.
