re Annulment proceedings in Maine

A friend of mine has been married for 8 years. A few months after the marriage took place, his wife told him she had never gotten a divorce from her 1st husband. She subsequently filed for, and obtained, a divorce from her first husband. Now she has filed for divorce from my friend. Since the "marriage" between my friend and his "wife" was not a lawful one, it is void and therefore an annulment would be the proper course of action -- not a divorce. Is that correct? Can he initiate annulment proceedings when she has already filed a divorce action?
Any help / advice will be appreciated. Thanks.
