What is the name of your state? MN

I purchased some merchandise mail order. Upon receipt, I discovered a key part was missing from the box. The box was sealed when I got it. No signs of tampering.

I called the manufacturer, they said it sometimes happens and that they would send me out the missing part. When they found out I didn't buy it from an authorized dealer, they said sorry, but the warranty is only valid when purchased from an authorized dealer.

What exactly is the law in this situation? Are they responsible, or can they just say I'm out of luck because I didn't buy from an authorized dealer?

The company I bought it from said it is the manufacturer's responsibility. Ultimately, if the manufacturer doesn't change their mind, I'll have to go to my credit card company. But I would like to know what the law and my rights are in this case.

Thank you. What is the name of your state?

You have the right to purchase the product from whom you choose. The manufacturer has the right to limit it's warranty to those that purchase from authorized dealers. It is highly your credit card company will be much help either.
