Vietnam deserter held at Camp Pendleton following arrest

(AP) - CAMP PENDLETON, California-A man who deserted the U.S. Marine Corps in 1968 was being held in military prison here following his arrest as he tried to enter the country from Canada, officials said.

Allen Abney, 56, was arrested Thursday when he and his wife tried to cross into the United States from their home in Kingsgate, British Columbia, for a trip to Reno.

His daughter, Jessica Abney, said he had crossed into the United States hundreds of times without incident. But officials said a routine computer check this time revealed an arrest warrant.

Allen Abney was born in the United States but grew up in Canada. He retained his American citizenship and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1968, soon after his younger brother received a draft notice.

Abney was sent to boot camp at Camp Pendleton but fled to Vancouver
after receiving a weekend pass to visit Mexico.

Marine Corps officials said his case will be reviewed by the current commander of his former unit. Deserters face punishment ranging from discharge to five years in jail, officials said.

I think it is good that you post these articles SHORTY. It helps to keep people thinking about the ramifications of going AWOL/UA.

Again... They never forget

Thanks SHORTY

I seriously doubt anything will happen to him maybe a few months in the jail and released on good behavior or something he's not going away for more than 5 months.....I remember last year when that Charles Jenkins guy who left his unit and fled to North Korea turned himself in he did like 25 days and was sent back.....

I'm sure the Marines never forget but then on the same note I'm sure they care more about other things than some ass that ran away when he was a teenager......

Yes you are pobably correct. I am just trying to point out to these people who plan on making a break for it. That ulitimately they will not succeed. They will live there lives looking over there shoulder and wonder what is going to happen next. It is no way to live life.

As said before I hope more of these articles pop up to remind todays youth of the thngs that can happen. Even long after you are married, have kids, a house and a good job. You can get pulled over for something that may not even be your fault and bang!!! Everything you have just got compromised because you where not man enough to get it taken care of.

MY advice to all AWOL/UA personel. Turn yourself in!!! They will never forget you. 30 years from now and you think all is happy and good. then BANG!!! you have a really bad day becuse of some really stupid traffic top. It may cost you your job. it will cause a lot of embaressment. Just imagine being pulled over while your kids and wife are in the car and being hand cuffed and hauled off to jaill. Or worse just the kids are in the car and you have noone to drive them home. The list goes on and on.

They are like the Mafia THEY NEVER FORGET

Respectfully, thank you "thepizzaguy" for your kindness to my posting! Yes, the "Green Machine" never forgets; like the Mafia, and most likely because this guy left after "bootcamp" he will get at least an "oth" and who knows maybe even a big chicken dinner! I will watch this case closely and share the latest when it is unaveiled, that is, if they will disclose the outcome as to what happens to this guy! Respectfully in Reply, Shorty

And 'averad' no disrespect but this is not the same posting as I shared earlier in time about "awol' Marines that were caught! Close but no cigar!
