What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CT

Hi All!

Quick question. I recently responded to an ad looking for news stringers at a small local paper. As requested, I dropped off my resume. When I did I was asked to fill out a short, one page form with address, ss#, address etc. Typical stuff. But at the bottom of the form I was surprised to be asked about my marital status and number of children. Isn't that illegal?

TIA!

Its not illegal to ask, but it would be illegal if that information is used in any way where you don't get an interview or get hired on. IMO, it is very stupid of that employer to even ask.

Yup. Those are really stupid questions to ask but they're not illegal. I can only guess this small local newspaper doesn't know better. That's not uncommon for very small organizations.
