Marriage/Greencard question..

What is the name of your state? Maryland
I am a US Citizen...and I'm in love with a guy who's been in this country for almost 12 years, and has his work permit... so he's not really illegal. One problem though, he doesn't have a green card yet. If we were to get married, how long would the process take to get his green card? and what are the procedures?
