(In Virginia, at least) I don't believe it does. A Marriage License is what goes to the Government to certify that you are married in the eyes of the law. Without it, the Government has no way to prove who is and is not married, allowing for tax fraud et cetera. However, some states have common law marriages, so usually after a time period of several years you are considered married for all intents and purposes.

:) Be sure to look it up.

Please don't answer a question if you don't know the answer. In this case OP is asking a question but does not provide enough information to answer it.

First of all it is re an underage, unregistered marriage in another country, the person then came to the US, we don't know what state or if they came together with their husband. If they went to a common law state she might be married, if not we don't know because we cannot answer questions about international law.

Marriage

I have been reading up on marriage laws and I dont see where the gov makes it manditory to get a license. George Washington as well as the Amish never had a license. It is God who joins two people together and the witnesses are there to make it legal in the states eyes. Can't I simply have it notarized as a public record?

I don't believe your marriage is legal because my mother actually did the same thing for tax purposes.... as she put it, in god's eyes its good, but for all legal purposes it is not good enough, because the licensce itself is what registers it with the govenments.

This is where the seperation of state and church comes in.
