Hi, I live in California, and on june 4th I was married by an ordaned minister. We recieved a marriage certificate, but didn't file for a marriage liscense with the county. Isn't there some type of statute that states If what we did made us believe we were married then we are married. or something to that affect?

My response:

No. Do not pass Go! Do not collect $200.00.

P.S. Under California law, you're not married. You're just "shacking up" together. Your "Certificate" isn't worth the paper it's written on. That's it. Finito.

would your answer be different if.......

I told you the whole story? Well, We were married on June 4th, and he was killed on June 6th. His mother and sister were both at the wedding and will do anything they can if I need them to. Is it still hopeless?

P.s. We were together for 10yrs prior to getting married and have 2 children together, one 10 and one 5.

My response:

Of course I know what you're talking about.

You want to obtain "putative spouse" status. But, because of what you wrote in your initial post, you are not eligible.

fknbad73 -

You have my sympathy. Your post was shocking to read, I couldn't even imagine how tragic it must have been to be married on June 4 and lost your new husband on June 6.
Again, my sympathies and I hope your situation has a good resolution.

good luck
