I live in Detroit, Michigan. My car has been at a mechanic's shop for over five months. I had an engine replaced. The original cost was $1800 and I paid just $800 four months ago. I lost my job and am unable to pay the balance.

I just recieved a letter from the mechanic today asking me to sign over the car to him. What are my options?

Is there a ninety day time limit within which a mechanic is supposed to effect a lien on my car?

How long do I have to pay the $1000 balance before the mechanic auctions it?

What other options do I have?
