illinois, a mechanics lein was placed upon our house when the builder did not pay this contractor. this lein was placed after we closed and fully paid the builder. how can the contractor put a lein on us, the party who is not liable?

who is liable, how is this to be cleared and how long does this usually take.

The contractor has every right to place a lien on the property. The builder is liable and you have to now sue. Next time get lien waivers from all contractrs before paying the builder off.
