What is the name of your state? VA
I current provide medical/dental for my daughters. Starting next year my wife will be paying for the coverage through her job as it is 1/2 the cost.
I have an ex-wife who has been convicted of identity theft against me. Are
there any measures I can request or employ through the insurance company to protect my wife's personal and work information from disclosure.

I don't want my ex-wife calling the medical plan contact numbers trying to gain information about my wife, etc. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Often times, the insurance member number is the social security number and birthdate of the primary insured member in this case your wife, with the name and birthdate of the insured person as secondary information. Due to HIPPA medical information shouldn't be released with signed waiver, so to get that would take a deliberate act of fraud.

This issue just came up on a program about ID theft last night. When she get's the insurance make sure that she requests some other number than her social security number and birthdate, otherwise with that information, your ex can pretty much access most other things from there. Also it is wise to change all passwords based on your SSN and default to last 4# of SSN, things such as mother's maiden name can be substituted with another if it is known, these can be changed also. Shread documents, bills and advertisments prior to disposal or burn them.

Another good idea is to make sure that you put password protection on all your accounts and require that other forms of ID that would be difficult for the party to obtain, such as a passport. Have the card only sent to your address, so you can check it before passing it on. If your ex already has your wife's SSN she already has access to much other information. goto the site anybirthday.com and see if your birthdays come up, if they do, request they remove them. You may also want to check major internet sites for information available about you. In the future get either unlisted numbers, most will list under a different name than billed and can withhold the address, making obtaining information about you more difficult.
