Do I have the right to require a doctor to allow a family member to remain in the room during a medical exam? I had a bad experience once during an exam, and I never want to be alone with a doctor during a medical exam again. Since then, one doctor refused to allow my spouse to remain in the room during an exam.

No, you do not have a right to force the doctor to allow a family member (or anyone else) to be present during your medical exam. You may request it, but the doctor may refuse to do the exam, too.

No competent doctor who was aware of your history would deny your reasonable request to have a patient advocate of your choice, spouse included, with you during an exam.

Is that legally enforceable? No. Are there practice's with exam rooms to small for this? Yes. There are lots of doctors in the world. You are a client, and if they can't honor this reasonable request, don't go. Be sure to ask and confirm it in advance. This is not an uncommon situation. Lots of people have medical trauma. You are not alone.

What sort of examination is it?

It is considered unprofessional conduct for a doctor in Georgia to not have a nurse or a person of the patient's choosing present during a gynecological exam. Georgia Medical Board Rule 360-3-.02(12)

That is standard in my state as well...I always assumed it was standard pretty much everywhere.
