After my 13 month old son had already been under anesthesia for 45 minutes, the anesthesiologist came to inform me in the waiting area that they were having difficulty starting an IV and gave me the option of 1. rescheduling surgery (a ridiculous option) or 2. consenting to a central line. I discussed several options with her, voiced my concerns (this was a very healthy 1 yr old in a major pediatric hospital) and consented to #2. I was mortified when they brought him from post-anesthesia to find well over 2 dozen needle sticks on his little bruised extremities, including his head, and five sticks in his neck. I am a medical professional and my mother, who was there, is a registered nurse. We confirmed these needle sticks also with the charge nurse. They even tried several times in the same vein, which you just don't do. They put him at greatly increased risk with the central line, needle sticks, and doubled anesthesia time. He took a while to recover, but seems fine now. Can I do anything legally to keep another mother from having to see their child like this after surgery?
