Zigner,

LOL, wow. Well, all I can say is...good for you. I wasn't in any way trying to start an argument, but from your recent responses, it seems like you are for some reason. Your last few posts have come across as defensive, to say the least, for no apparent reason. I wasn't even directing any reply posts toward you, yet you seem to be jumping in with defensive comments as if someone is arguing with you.

I appreciate the helpful, non-argumentative advice provided by some here. However, the other defensive posts/personal attacks are really unnecessary.
What I am pointing out is that you are NOT in the majority when you say you are oblivious to your expiration date on your license.

Beyond that, nothing I saw was attacking you.

All done - good day to you! :p :D

While I do not want to incur anyone's wrath here ;), the minority has just grown by one.

Like mi325, I never look at my license and I have absolutely no clue when it expires. I know I once had a sales clerk tell me that my license had expired, and I had apparently been driving with an expired license for over a month . Maybe Michigan does send out notices now, but I am not so sure they always did that.

Also, I have been stopped for minor traffic violations before (all because the old car I used to drive always seemed to be missing some vital part, like brake lights or a head light) and I, too, was told each time by each of the officers that stopped me that I should keep the ticket with me in the car until I had the chance to remedy the problem, so I would not be ticketed again for the same violation. (I am not so sure they would do that with an expired driver's license, however. I never got stopped for that).

Maybe it is not technically legal to drive that way, or maybe it is just a Michigan thing, but it is true that police officers say that around here.

Thanks for your response quincy. ;) Yeah, since this experience, I've talked to a few more people that never received notices, even though it says all over Michigan's Secretary of State web site that they're sent out "about 45 days before expiration" (one place this is stated, is at http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,1607,7-127-1627_8667_9048-25226--,00.html ). A few of these people noticed at the last minute, and a few of them didn't...and some time had passed before they realized it in a way similar to the way you were made aware of it. After talking to a few lawyers, I settled on one today...and he (as well as a few of the other lawyers I'd spoke to) really think that something got transferred incorrectly with my move out of state and back. I just thought it was strange that my license plate renewal still made it to me (which I would've notice THAT being annual, if it hadn't lol). Luckily, they seem to think that we'll be able to find out about this from the SoS. Of course, the expiration date is still on the license...but, it may help a bit with the case, from their prior experience with these types of cases...also considering that my record is clean.

Again, thanks for your feedback on that, as well as the "get out of jail free" ticket with the other types of tickets...I knew I wasn't the only one in this situation. ;)

the thing is that most DLs expire on your birthday and on a nice round birthday number like 35 or 40 or 50. when i got my TN license, i was 34 and it will expire on my 40th birthday, I'll be 38 in a month. its not too hard to remember it will expire on my 40th birthday no? my boyfriends will expire on his 50th

For the 15 years that I lived in Michigan, I NEVER received a renewal by mail of my license and I lived in the same location for 15 years.:eek::eek: It is the driver's responsibility to LOOK at that driver's license to see when it expires.

Well, mine expired at 31--not quite what you would call a "nice round birthday number", is it? lol

Well, apparently there was something wrong there, and you never did anything to get it corrected. If you LOOKed at the web page at the URL I posted, you would see that Michigan's policy is "...the Secretary of State sends a renewal notice about 45 days before expiration". If you'd also LOOKed at this policy any time in the 15 years that you lived at the same address in Michigan, you could have gotten the issue corrected and received renewal notices like you were supposed to.:eek::eek:

Since I went down to the license branch PRIOR to it expiring, it never was a problem. I look EVERY year BEFORE my birthday to see if will be EXPIRING. I do not rely on 'renewal' notices to keep up on my obligations. I use my calendar to make sure I do what I am supposed to do.

My point is just that you have to be proactive in life. If you always depend on others to tell you when you have to do something, then you may have an unpleasant surprise (AKA ticket.)

No way.

If we rely on others to tell us when to do things, we can blame them when we feel they haven't notified us properly or in a timely fashion.

Expired license? Not my fault. The DMV didn't send me a reminder notice.

Parking ticket? Not my fault. The sign wasn't posted correctly.

No way. That would be too close to taking responsibility. We can't have that.

Etc, etc, ad nauseum.

Wow, the drama around here is unbelievable...talk about nauseating! The name of the site is "FreeAdvice", with a slogan of "Outstanding Advice. Unbeatable Price." How is throwing your big ego around with an attitude giving anyone "Outstanding Advice."? Sometimes if you can't help with what the site was meant for, it's best to just keep your mouth shut. If you're really that insecure that you need to constantly take shots at others like that, it may be time to see someone about that issue.

Gee, I wish I was as PERFECT in every way as Ginny J seems to think he/she is. I guess you've done everything right in your life and never made a mistake or overlooked anything...wow, good for you! You must feel pretty darn special (apparently, from your posts lol). Yep, obviously because of this one incident, that MUST mean that I "always depend on others" to tell me when I have to do something, right? Quite an statement there from someone who doesn't even know me...

Like I said, you may want to follow the theme of the site, and give advice when you can...but contstant criticisms with attitude or ego problems are really unnecessary.

mi325,

All I ever stated to begin with was that I had never received notices to re-up my driver's license. It seemed hit or miss on the car renewals. I just don't count on others to have to remind me on things that happen every year. If I get a renewal, great! If I don't I have systems in place to keep me sane. Guess you learn these things when you are a mommy of many children.
