What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Michigan

My wife and I have decided to get a divorce in the State of Michigan. In the meantime, we will obtain a Separate Maintenance Agreement so that I can keep some employee benefits over the next year or so. We have amicably came to an agreement on the settlement of property and I will be providing spousal support for one year. Has anyone gone through this process and is there a template that I can use to get this started?

Thank you,

Adam

I looked into it as an option. There are some books out there and legal form providers that have the forms (or they advise you to modify the divorce forms). An important thing to research is whether or not the employer providing benefits has changed their policies to consider separate maintenance being considered the same as a divorce where it would trigger loss of benefits.

Two blog posts by attorneys mentioning that change by some employers:

Millions have gone through the "process" and the smart ones didn't try to do it themselves. They pay a professional. And here that professional should be representing just one of you; the wife.

That is unless you are willing to take the risk of something you doctor up coming apart should she change her mind. And don't think that they can't have second thoughts. Thoughts that can come to fruition because she didn't receive independent legal advice.
