What is the name of your state? New Mexico

A male teacher age 32 has been teaching a course called "Teen Court" for 4 years. In this time, I have heard stories from the children that has worried me. The children are between the ages of 11 and 14 years old, and consider him to be a fantastic teacher. However, I do not agree. The state in which I reside has a Teen Court program in which peers "try" other students charged with misdemeanors such as vandalism, public drunkeness, tresspassing, etc. I was part of this program when I was in high school and considered it to be successful. In my current middle school, the teacher has taken it to a disgusting level. The curriculum includes talking about practices used for the death sentence (electrocution WITH PHOTOGRAPHS, gas, lethal injection); serial killers, their motives, and practices; body decomposition after life has been terminated; and domestic abuse along with a mock-trial involving a rape case and a lesson involving the students cover themselves with make-up to simulate bruising for photographing. Several times, there have been condoms as a prop in trials and speeches, and the teacher routinely brings a sword to school to show off his martial arts skills. Lesson plans include the previous night's "CSI" senationalist television show as well as episodes of "X-Files" and "ER". Powerpoint presentations such as the "9/11 Coincidence," (in which things of little scientific consequence are treated as brutal fact) are part of the lesson procedure. While the children weep over the deaths of 9/11, they will simultaneously consider gruesome acts of serial killers, "Cool." Last week, he showed a film on the guillotine and how it was used on people. While this may be a college class, or maybe a high-school class with the appropriate background in psychology, I believe this is beyond the scope of the students' ability to cope. Kids at this age think these things are "cool," and may have very nice things to say about the teacher who teaches these things, but I do not believe the middle school is an appropriate forum for this "hobby" of his. He allows the students to use profane language in the class and has said on more than one occasion, "Whatever goes on in here, stays in here." I have spoken with several vice-principals, and the superintendent on this matter to no avail. I wonder if I have any legal rights to protect my students. PLEASE HELP ME! I feel as if I am the only one who finds his antics horrible. Thanks.

If it is like the similar programs out here, this is a completely voluntary course, and parents have to sign a waiver that explains some of this at the beginning. I imagine it is voluntary and not a mandatory course. if so, then you have the option of removing your child from the program.

Personally, I might not want my 11-year-old son involved, but I might not have a problem with my teenage son. It may be more a matter of maturity.

Also, if the curriculum is a problem, maybe you should consider a discussion with the teacher and/or the administration on your concerns. Perhaps they can explain the need for the visual aids. I can see a need for them, depending on the goals of the class. But, not knowing about the course, I can't really comment on it.

The course does not have an adopted curriculum and any lesson plans he has turned into the office does not reflect the nature of the activities in the classroom. (I checked.) The administration has agreed that showing pictures of executions and going over serial murders in gruesome detail are not acceptable, nor is the profane language allowed in his room. However, I do not feel that enough has been done if things like this continue to happen. My concern is not as a parent. I am a peer in this district and have heard that if the parents don't complain, the district has little case against him. If peers like me complain, there is no case. I consider it professionally unethical of me to get the parents involved. I am struggling with telling them the true nature of the classroom activities, since I don't think they really know and the students may be withholding information from their parents, but I also do not feel comfortable talking with parents about a builiding personnel matter.

why do you believe the parents of those students don't know what is going on in the classroom? How do you know so much if you aren't teaching the class? If the students are telling you they may also be telling their parents AND their parents are okay with the class.
