hi my sister is 18 we're in alabama. Recently she ran away and joined the military. She is sill in high school. My dad is trying to get her back by the police. Some of the police are saying they can pick her up Bc even thought the emancipation was automatic with joining the military she still has to graduate high school. Is that true?

Your father apparently can have your sister returned home up to the age of 19 (when she reaches the age of majority under Alabama law).

To be eligible for military service (according to Military.com), you must be at least 17 years old, and 17 year olds need to have parental consent to enlist, and you must have at least a high school degree (GEDs may or may not be acceptable).

Here is a link to military eligibility: http://www.military.com/join-armed-forces/join-the-military-basic-eligibility.html

The police are the wrong people to be talking to. He needs to be talking to her military command. I also think that there is a chance that federal law would apply here rather than state law.

quincy didn't cite AL law...
Regardless, the age of majority in Alabama is 19. Unfortunately, my link to the state's code seems to be not working, however, you can google Alabama Code Title 26. Infants and Incompetents. § 26-1-1.

Sorry. I wrote "Georgia" but meant "Alabama." My post WAS referring to Alabama law and I have now corrected my error.

Here is the link you want, TheGeekess: http://codes.findlaw.com/al/title-26-infants-and-incompetents/al-code-sect-26-1-1.html

You can use the "next" button to work your way through Section 26.

When you say your sister has joined the military -- do you mean she has actually enlisted and shipped out, or is she in a Future Soldier/Delayed Entry Program status?
