What is the name of your state?washington
--I have been made the sole beneficiary to friends military retirement. He has been divorced for years. Will it go to me or is the ex entitled?

Spouses will continue to receive a military pension only if the military person selected the Survivor Benefit Program which reduces their pension to provide for surviving spouses. Ex-spouses may be entitled to SBP.

If SBP was not selected upon retirement, the pension ends when the retired person dies.

Needless to say, friends are not spouses.

Ask your friend to look at the papers in the divorce file to make sure there is no mention of ex being entitled to any portion of the military retirement.

And ask your friend if he has listed your name on a specific beneficiary designation form.
