I would like to know exactly what are the rights of a seventeen year old in NY.
I have a cousin who is 22 and his girlfriend is seventeen. they are very much in love and they want to be together. the girls mother, had previously approved of the relationship, even accompanying her on visits to jail to visit my cousin. the mother recently started a relationship with a new man. now, this man has decided that the relationship has to end. they will not allow any contact between my cousin and his girlfriend. i want to know what her rights are. can she 'emancipate' herself?

"...can she 'emancipate' herself?..."

She must first get a full-time job so she can support herself 100%.

No. She cannot emancipate herself - she would need a judge to do it for her. And that won't happen - not for this reason. A judge isn't going to grant her emancipated status so that she can see a boyfriend her parents don't approve of.

What she can do is wait till she's 18. Then she can see whoever she wants.

Somehow, I doubt that any judge would be touched by this story. In fact, a judge might take the child away from the mother for her appalling lack of common sense and her wilful disregard of her legal obligation to protect the daughter.

Mom is taking her minor daughter to jail to visit her adult boyfriend who is in custody for something?!?

What is WRONG with mom?!

Is THIS the kind of man that mom and daughter think is a fine example and role model!?

I concur with Seniorjudge - if this gets before a judge, mom is likely to get whacked.
