Misdelivered Package

I live in NJ, I recently ordered something from a very large company, and they mistakenly shipped me, in another box, something else I didn't order. The UPS label has my name on it but the invoice is some other company. The company is in CA. Am I under any legal obligation to send this back?

If you contact the company that made the shipment to you by mistake they will send you a UPS shipping label and pay the return shipment cost. It will require less effort on your part than registering for this site, agonizing over the question and posting this letter and waiting for responses did. Honesty is usually cheap and straightforward and doesn't interfere with your family life as much as dishonesty. If you really want the item, send them a check.

Thank you for not answering my question. I know what the right thing to do is, it was mailed back friday, but since it came up at dinner time, I was curious as to what the laws regarding the situation is.

I appreciate your having written back to us.

Of course, I could have gone into a long discourse on the actual law involved; however, that didn't seem necessary.

Common sense, and an understanding of the difference between right and wrong was the easiest answer to your post.

You did the right thing, and your common sense won the day.
