I just want to add this bit of knowledge to story--pneumonia, as in the OP's accounting, usually comes from the mouth. When you have a cold and your nose is stuffed up, you breathe through your mouth and inhale the virus and bacteria into your lungs, bypassing the natural protective actions of the nose (nose "hairs", and cilia in the upper airway) (smoking kills those important cilia).
Always throw out your toothbrush after having a cold or an upper respiratory infection; otherwise, you are putting the virus and bacteria back into your mouth and setting yourself up for a relapse.
