My fiance and I just bought a house. We are both able to claim the itemized deduction for mortgage interest (we are both co-owners of the property and we are both co-borrowers on the mortgage). We obviously file two separate tax returns -- does it matter who claims the deduction or if it's split between the two of us? I'm thinking the IRS doesn't care as long as the deduction is only claimed once.
