What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Minnesota

We moved into Edina Towers property for a 3 month term while our new home was being built. The mgmt rep we signed the lease with told us that since we were leaving actually 10 weeks after we moved in, we needn't worry about the 2 month notice for move out and that he would "take care of it" since he knew we were leaving in 10 weeks. When we informed mgmt as to our move out date, they told us that since they weren't notified with 2 months notice, that we would be liable for 2 additional months of rent and utilities. This amounts to just over $2800. I'm wondering if we can fight this. We just received the notice 2 days ago and are told that we have 7 days to pay or else They will turn this over to a collections company. The employee that we signed the lease with left the company shortly after our issue. Not sure if the two were related. We didn't have any issues with the property and left the space in better condition than when we moved in. I'm willing to offer something to avoid a legal entanglement, but am not sure how to proceed. thank you.

The employee probably had no authority to make that decision, and you don't have any proof of the agreement. You should have asked that the agreement be put in writing. This will be a costly error on your part. You can try to track the employee down and hope that Management does not have reason to show in court that your proof is tainted by a disgruntled former employee

Sorry, but the mgmt agent's promise is only as good as the paper it's written on. Rental agents often make useless promises to get you to sign that lease which are ultimately unenforceable.

If it ain't in writing, it never happened. Next time, be sure to get it put down in paper & signed off.
