Moving due to fear for personal safety

I live in Georgia.

I've lived at the same apartment complex for just over three years. It was newly renovated when I moved in and was a great place to live for a reasonable price. Particularly in the last year, the quality of life has deteriorated significantly.

In 10/06 my six month old car was keyed for no apparent reason. My downstairs neighbor, who moved in two months after me, had her car keyed last week. Two other neighbors have had their cars broken into.

Two nights ago, the same downstairs neighbor whose car was vandalisized was robbed at gunpoint in our parking lot. She handed over her purse and cell phone but (unwisely) refused to give the criminal her keys. She threw them off into the landscaping instead and he took off running with her purse. She had her keyless entry remote in her pocket and immediately hit the panic button and started screaming for help. The thief turned back toward her and fired a shot that thankfully missed.

Needless to say, both she and I feel very unsafe here and management has done nothing so far to assuage those fears. Thankfully, both of our leases expired in the last few months and neither of us signed a new one yet. We're on a 'month-to-month' basis. The expired lease states that a 30-day notice is required and it must be given on the 1st of the month. They will not accept one on the 15th that indicates a move out date of the 15th of the following month.

Legally, can I (and my neighbor) move out in the next few weeks because we fear for our personal safety as well as the safety our vehicles? The soonest we could move out, bsed on their required notice, would be July 31st if we give notice on or before July 1.

I'd be amenable to giving a 30-day notice from today's date and paying for that portion of next month just so I could get out. Either way, I'm moving next Friday. I just don't want to pay a penny more than I must for rent on an empty apartment.

Advice is much appreciated.

Then that is what you must do. Give your notice BEFORE July 1... and move out on or before July 31st (you are obligated to pay rent through that date, but can leave sooner).
