What is the name of your state? WI

Can you tell me if downloading music files off of Kazaa is legal for just my private home use and not redistributing them in any way? I heard there is a chance of getting sued if I continue to do this. I pay .75 a month for this, does that at all make it legal?? Please let me know ASAP!

Are you sure that its not legal even if its just for my personal use? If it is illegal as Napster was, how come the website is still being allowed to be up and running?? Also, I notice there are still plenty of users on there downloading music, how do I know that I would get in trouble, or would I just be taking a chance?

Have you been watching the news lately? The RIAA, which is the watchdog group for the music industry, has announced they are going after those that illegally swap MP3 files using Kazaa, especially those with large collections. The announcement even stated that those that downloaded as few as 100 songs will be targets of their lawsuits. The odds of getting caught are on the slim side but if you are caught, it will be expensive.

FYI, I removed Kazaa from my computer, even though I only downloaded a few items, I am not taking any chances.

Ok, thank you racer for your advice. I think I may delete mine too. I've only downloaded and burned about 10 cd's, but like you said, it's not worth the risk. I wasn't sure if they were gonna go after the little guys or not, but it sounds like they might, so I'm with you, not taking any more risks. Do you know of any other way to get music to burn? Does it matter if you pay for access to the website or not? How come Kazaa is still up and running? Any ideas?

The sites that are still up for Kazaa and all of its incarnations are all mirror sites. Kazaa itself is run from outside the US and the US has not legal juridiction in Vanuatu, a small island country in the south Pacific where Sharman Networks is located. And when you use the Kazaa software, you are not connecting to a website, you are connecting to sometimes hundred of thousands of other computers. When you are online and connected to the internet, what ever you have in the "My Shared Files" folder is available to anyone else using Kazaa. Kazaa itself in actually old networking software packaged with a basic web browser and MP3 playback software. Having Kazaa on your computer itself is not going to get you in trouble, there are legitimate reasons for using it. I have used Kazaa quite a bit myself, it was a handy way for me to make certain files available to others without sending large emails. If you are just a downloader and use Kazaa reasonably, there is no reason to worry about anything, the RIAA is not looking for those folks. There are others that have set up large servers with large amounts of illegal files and they make them available to Kazaa users. Some honestly believe that it is fair to share music on the net, others do it out of spite. These are the people the RIAA are looking for.

BTW, the only reason I remove Kazaa was to remove the temptation. I too found the world of P2P networking to be highly rewarding.
