I live in Oregon, and yesterday, a family member of mine informed me that my bank had contacted them about the status of my account. The information that was given to them was the account balance. My girlfriend and I overdrew our account, and they spoke to them about trying to clear it up. The woman that called them was the bank manager. After speaking with my girlfriend's parents, they felt compelled to pay the deficit for us. Isn't this a violation of our privacy? They had no right to discuss the account with them.

The only thing I can think of is that this is a small credit union, and the manager and employees know all the members personally, and my girlfriend's parents are members as well.

Another thing I was thinking was that my girlfriend and I both applied for a loan with her parents as co-signers. We are up to date with our loan payments, so that should not be an issue, since the loan payment is set aside in a different account.

Can anyone tell me if any laws were broken, and what kind of options I have? I would appreiciate any responce.

Thanks
Ben

I would suggest saying thank you to your G/F's parents and not overdraw the account anymore. Would you prefer checks bouncing all over town? A lot of large banks would have let it happen and you'd be cleaning up the mess. This sounds like a darn good place to bank in my opinion.

Thank the parents

Ok, thank you for the opinion. As a matter of fact, we did thank them for the help, but the issue still stands. We were not overdrawn by much, and it was related to our ISP at the time double charging us, and that caused all kinds of NSF issues.

It's not like we were running around writing bad checks.

The point I am trying to make is that I feel like the bank basically "harrased" my g/f's parents for the money. Our account status is none of their business. Are they going to start calling my friends and telling them my status? Can anyone call up and request my account information now? Are they emailing all the other members this information too?

Don't judge me before you know the details.
I am not trying to rip off the system, the system seems to be screwing me.
