What is the name of your state? CA

My home phone number was posted on Craigs List without my consent by someone.

I alerted CL and they took down the TWO posts were someone was impersonating me.

I also called the police and they referred me to a website for reporting "white collar internet crimes".

CL has rules that SEEM like they come down hard on people who impersonate others by saying that they charge a 1000 dollar fine to those who do it.

Yet ive talked to others who have done it to people and they say NOTHING ever happened.

How to i make sure that the person who did this is brought to justice?

And what really happens to people to do things like this??

Any advice would really help...

lol

Yeah it is.

NO ONE has my home phone number, but family and CLOSE friends.

I think i know who did it but i have no way to prove it.

I also saved the posts from CL as evidence if needed by anyone later.

You mean just print them out and walk into a police department??

(theres actually two posts from the girl that i believe may have done this to me)

One of which has a Nude girl on it pretending to be me.

oh

I already called the police though and they referred me somewhere else?

If it is who i think it is, then there is a complicated story behind it.

------The story behind why my number may have been posted-----------------

This girl that i think did it is the little sister of a close friend who went missing.
Her family sent her away somewhere because she (my best friend) refused to believe in jehova (sp?).

Keep in mind that my best friend IS of adult age.

So after my friend was supposed to move up north to "help her grand mother"
My friend was supposed to call me to let me know that she was ok and she made the move safely.
She never called.
Shes been gone since oct. of last year, and since then i have heard NOTHING.

We didnt end on a bad note, and she even old me "we're not over" "ill try to call you as soon as i get there" (you know all the things that let you know that you'll still be friends and that distance means nothing)

After about two, two and half months i became EXTREMELY worried, she is not the type of person to mot call her friends (she only has a handful and i know them all.

So i called her mothers house to see what was going on, and if i could have a number to contact her or an address so i could at least write letters.

Then i get "well we follow the way of jehovah and because you dont, we're not going to help you find her or get in contact with her....sorry"

Thats when i knew something was REALLY wrong.
So i thought and thought, what could i do to get to my friend to make sure she is ok.

I went to the store and bought a cell phone, loaded it with minutes and hid it inside a teddy bear.

Her mother ended up finding it (i dont know how because i did it really good and you couldnt even tell anything was in there) and tearing the bear apart.

Get this, her mother discovered it because "she had demon attacks" (whatever that is)

So they got to the phone and started using it. I called the phone company and had it turned off.

This is when i knew that someone had my phone and was using it.
My home phone number was in that phone, along with all our mutual friends numbers so that my friend could call any of her friends once she got the phone.

So thats why i think its my best friends little sister that posted my home number on CL.

I also think this because she used to go on and on about this website called suicide girls, and on one of the ads there was a naked SG.

Sorry, just thought i would give you the background info on why it could have been posted.

While you potentially have a claim for invasion of privacy for publicly posting the unlisted number, you have two "problems". The first is you have no admissible proof as to who did it, thus no one to pay any recovery. Second is that your damages are basically whatever it costs you to get a new unlisted number. From what I understand, that probably doesn't amount to much - maybe even less than the court filing fee.

Might be time for "extra-judicial" remedies...

No, The little sister of the JW family (who also does not want to believe but just does it to please her mother) did it.

The third problem would be that an "unlisted" number is not truly "private"... ;)

yeah

I totally hear you and im not trying to get damages from it.

Im just trying to get the person that did this, so that they never do it to anyone else ever again.

Now from what i understand when i read the rules of CL, they seem like they come down hard on people who do things like this and impersonation.

So how would do they post that theres a "1000 dollar fine" if they didnt some how had a way to track it?

And if so, will no one care about my situation just because im NOT seeking damages??

Becuase i could if i really needed to.

y mother actually has cancer and i get paid by the state to take care of her and because i was getting calls at all hours of the night i was deprived sleep and then couldnt be there for my mother when she needed me.

That the took away from my doing my actually REAL OFFICIAL job.

I dont know if thats damage enough to get the police to serve CL to legally get the information on who did this.

I may regret asking, but what exactly is it you did with this teddy bear? Were you having your friends mother send it to her since you don't have the address? Hoping that she would get the teddy bear and some how know there was a phone in it? Or does your friend also experience these "demon attacks" and would therefore discover the hidden phone like her mother did?

Maybe it wasn't a demon attack, but rather someone calling your phone, which made it ring. Hence, your friends mother could have became suspicious when the bear began ringing for no explainable reason? (Other than the demons of course)
