My neighbors are control freaks. EVERTHING sets them off. When we run our sprinklers, when we bring in our trash cans,where we put our soft water unit...etc. You get the picture. This has caused many disagreements, however they have now crossed a line.
We have been hosting foreign exchange students in our home for many years. It supplements our income by $200 a week. We count on this money. About a week ago, a new student showed up at our house earlier that expected. Keep in mind, she is young, from another country and very nervous. My husband and I were at the store when she arrived. She knocked on our neighbors door for help and he proceeded to scare the crap out of her. First of all he was rude and angry. Second of all, he told her we were bad people and that she wasnt safe. When she had difficulty understanding him, he handed her a packet of photos of our home and documentation of things we had done to upset him. Some true, some not. Some valid,some not. Example: photos of our outdoor trash, photos of us blocking the sidewalk with our car, etc. It was all very ridiculous, but neverthless, she didnt know what to make of it. She contacted the school, and ultimantly
went back to Germany. Result? I lost out on $2,800. The school has given me a written statement saying that, 1. We have always had excellent reviews from our students 2. That the student left as a direct result of my neighboor and 3. That we can no longer host students in our home unless we move.
I have filed a restraining order that I expect to have signed and served on Monday. However, I have lost income because of this jerk and I want to sue him for loss of income. My thought are that his statement about her being unsafe may have been illegal. Also, putting into writing false accusations and then giving it to our student. (I have the packet he gave her) The false accusations are, name calling, threats etc.
Do I have a case for libel? Any help is appreciated
