I BOUGHT(AND MOVED IN TO) A 2-FAMILY HOUSE IN BROOKLYN, NY 11/97. I RENTED THE UPSTAIRS APT. ON 12/97. THE TENANTS SIGNED A 1 YR. LEASE AND GAVE ME $800 SECURITY DEPOSIT. @ END OF 1ST YR. I GAVE THEM LEASE FOR '99 AND THEY REFUSED TO SIGN. THEY HAD ALWAYS PD. ON TIME AND IN FULL. I DIDN'T BOTHER PURSUING THE LEASE ISSUE. THEREFORE, THE LEASE FROM 12/97-12/98 IS THE ONLY ONE THE TENANTS EVER SIGNED AND IS THE ONLY DOCUMENT THAT SAYS I MUST RETURN THEIR SECURITY DEPOSIT. AM I EXPECTED TO ABIDE BY THE STATEMENTS OF AN EXPIRED LEASE? IF SO, DOES NY LAW REQUIRE THAT I PAY INTEREST ON THIS AMT.?
