I live in Ct My uncle lives in Florida, A few years ago Uncle Tony met two people a, husband and wife. They quickly moved in and took care of him. My uncle is 85 years old and in poor health,(he is on oxygen) This past Christmas I tried to get him on the phone but all of his numbers were disconnected. I called the police and they drove by to see if he was alright, he was okay, Paul his live-in caretaker said they were trying to get a hold of us but they were having phone trouble (yeah right) Now my cousin who lives in Fl about 40 miles away went to see him and found out tomorrow( Thursday the 23rd) he will be removed from his home and I guess his properties will be seized, as for his caretakers, don't know where they are. If I call the police not sure what to tell them. I think they are removing him because he did not pay taxes, etc. but he had money to pay,he also took in rent every month. I am assuming Paul and his wife who were supposed to make sure he pays his bills took some of it. That's all I know for now. I will take any advice

Here is legalese's other, related thread that gives some background information: https://forum.freeadvice.com/marriage-domestic-partnerships-other-family-law-matters-45/not-sure-where-post-602534.html

The cousin in Florida who checked on your uncle is probably in a better position than you to assess the matter, and then contact the police if he finds reason to. You might want to escape Connecticut's cold and head down to Florida yourself, to see if there is any way you can assist.

Good luck.

I take it your cousin rarely visits your uncle (is your uncle this cousins father?).

Don't know what you are looking for. A house being take for taxes doesn't happen overnight. That suggests nobody has been checking on tony with any regularity.

You need to act quickly to find out if there is any way to save his house at this time and if so, hopefully somebody is willing to help him. If there is no salvation, where will uncle tony go?

The advice you were given almost a month ago was to get your butt down to Florida to check on your Uncle but I guess you never managed to do that.

Couldn't get down there and impossible to contact him with no phones. When ever i go down there I visit everyday but he always trusted his caretakers so it's hard to be pushy about his finaces. Our cousins in Fl visit regular every month or so but he seemed happy and always said his bills were paid but now I found out that he has not paid taxes on his home for a few years. I guess it is our fault for not being pushy. Just as soon as my cousin calls with more details i will call the police.

Why can't your cousins call the police? They are the ones who are apt to be more helpful, since they are in the area and have been in contact with your uncle recently.

I remember you!
If you were so flippin' concerned, you should have gone down there.

What are you going to call the police about???

You were bound and determined in your first post that the caretakers were bad, bad, people.
They may be bad people, but you and your cousin aren't much better.

I think it is unfair to call us bad people, I live 1500 miles away. When he seemed happy and did not want anyone in his financial business we assumed that everything was okay. He would not give me any info. You know these old guys are.

UPDATE Two cousins who live in Fl are trying to help. Here is what i found out so far. My uncle has only $1.70 in the bank, so they cleaned him out and they bought one of his homes for $14.000 I guess with my uncle's own money. ( so how come he only has $1.70 in the bank?) The police are on it now. I will let you know more as I find out.
