I was married in 1997, my wife and I seperated in 1999. She moved away and got married in 2000. I've looked all over and I can't find a copy of a divorce decree anywhere. She said that our marriage in 1997 was invalid because the marriage license check bounced, but we still maintained the checking account during the marriage(our bank covered all bounced checks). We were married in TN and I reside in Louisiana and she in Maryland. I want to get married, but no one seems to understand my situation. What are my options to get a divorce and is there any legal compensation that I can seek through her bigatry?

My response:

When you wrote your letter to the TN County Clerk in the City where you were married, did the Clerk tell you whether there was a valid Certificate of Marriage on file ?

Also, just a point of note : Bigotry is when a White person, for example, says they don't like Black people. The noun is "Bigot", as in, "He's a member of the KKK and he's a Bigot".

I think the word you were trying to say was "Bigamy" - - that's when a person is married to more than one person at the same time.
