In my first apartment I set up the utilites in my name. The gas bill never came the first 8 months we were living there and when it finnally did it was for $2,494. My roomate had since moved out, but was living there during the time period that the bill is for, and is on the signed lease for the entire year.
After much griping on my part she finnally (after 4 months) gave me $100 and refuses to pay anymore. She says it's my problem because it's in my name. I say it's our problem because we are both on the lease and agreed to split the bills.
Do I have legal grounds to sue her?:(

I'll bet you thught gas company forgot about you and you were going to get a free ride. How come you never called and asked about the bill? Now you have this mess. Take her to Small Claims and do your best. Judge will probably ask same question I did!

I really wasn't trying to get out of anything. It was my first place and I was just clueless. The bills came and we just paid them - we never questioned anything.
The gas bill did actually come twice and I paid it, but it was the resident's account, not mine, and was later credited towards the bill.
