What is the name of your state? Texas

My husband is dead and I don't get along very well with his family. Do I have to go through a lawyer to start using my maiden name?

You would have to legally change your name. That does not necessarily require an attorney, but it certainly would be easier to have an attorney handle it for you. It probably wouldn't be too expensive either.

However, its not a very complicated process. The forms to do so should be available at your local courthouse.
