What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NC

I'm interested in legally changing my name because my current first and last names are constantly mispronounced and misspelled. I've been doing some research online about how to go about doing this and most of the things I've read strongly suggest hiring a lawyer for assistance, but I'm wondering if it's possible/advisable to do this type of thing while representing yourself (or perhaps looking into one of those Name Change Services online)? And can anyone provide a rough estimate of the cost of the whole ordeal if I did decide to hire a lawyer?

Also, I have a Level 4 DWI on my record from within the past year and am currently in quite a bit of credit card debt; would either of these things hinder the chances of getting my name change request approved in court?

Thanks for the help!

You might have problems changing your name, as it may seem that you are doing so in an attempt to evade your creditors and your criminal record.

Do a web search for self-help name change in North Carolina. I would, however, also recommend an attorney because your matter is more complex than "just a name change."
