As of now I am in utter shock about a situation that is going on with a good friend/neighbor of mine. My neighbor just turned 19 years old, she is currently living in an apartment which her mother is co-signing for. While she's a sweet girl, she's very naive. For the sake of this post I'll call her Mary. We have a mutual friend, Jack, who is 29 years old (he lied to us initially and said he was 24). We've known him for about 2 months and to me at least, he seems a little sketchy. Felonies on his record, complete alcoholic, and hanging out with a group of people ranging from ages 18-20. Smart guy though, and very manipulative. Just the other day I found out that he asked Mary to sign a 15 month lease for him. At first I was outraged, a 29 year old man asking a 19 year old girl to do something which clearly she does not fully understand. He cannot sign the lease himself because he has a felony and possibly an eviction. My first reaction was that he was taking advantage of her. I told her the full implications of signing a lease, and what a responsibility that was. A part of me at the time knew that she would be denied, with no credit and no job to speak of. I told her to withdraw the application and she lied to me and said that she did. This was a week ago. Jack is over at Mary's right now, and she does not have a printer. Just an hour ago Jack asked if he could print something off from my computer, and although I don't like him and don't trust him, I decided to let it go for the sake of Mary and be polite to him. He does not know I advised her to no go through with the lease. He prints off a document which is a forged job offer stating in the header that my neighbor lives in a different apartment, and is being offered a job with a salary of 37,000 because of her "knowledge and experience". She is 19, just dropped out of college, no job. In the "proof of income" he wrote that he was the district manager. My question, is what are the penalties if something like this was to be discovered by the apartment complex? Is this considered fraud? How much trouble could she be in if she goes through with this? Should I leave an anonymous tip to the apartment complex? I don't know what to do, my friend Mary, while stupid and naive, is still young and does not deserve to be taken advantage of, Any advise as to my next step, would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you all-
